History Department

Whether you are visiting our web page as a student or a member of the University, a citizen of Hannover or an interested party from outside – we are pleased to introduce our institute.

The History Department provides the opportunity to study history in its entire width and with different degrees. The members of the department conduct research, teach and learn in the subject areas Ancient History, Medieval History, Early Modern Times and Modern Times and History Didactics. In parallel to the epochal organization, the department also works in spatial categories which include German and European History as well as the history of Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and the Atlantic into the disciplinary canon. The combination of space and time offers a multitude of combination possibilities and prioritization to our students.

Students and lecturers at the History Department have a shared interest in working together, learning from each other, in formulating scientific questions and finding answers. Research and teachings about known and unknown worlds, modern medial environments and contemporary forms of communication and presentation shape the studies of history at the History Department into a productive association of students and lecturers.

We welcome you to inform yourself about our programme on our website.
