The conference on transatlantic history, jointly conceived and planned by Prof. Hatzky and Dr. Mayer from the Political Academy Tutzing, was part of a block seminar with a study trip from 17.-18.10.2025 involving 18 students from the History Department. Our conference aimed to explore how, in the 15th century on the Iberian Peninsula, a concept of "purity of blood" developed that established essentialist ascriptions beyond religious differences, going beyond conversion or cultural adaptation. With the conquest of the Americas, this concept was transferred and adapted to the colonial contexts of the Americas. These ideas of human inequality developed across the Atlantic and influenced each other mutually. The scholarly contributions from German and international historians and the subsequent discussions inspired our students, most of whom participated in an international academic conference for the first time.
