Indischer Ozean - Raum als Bewegung
Das Gruppenforschungsprojekt wurde am Geisteswissenschaftlichen Zentrum Moderner Orient in Berlin (heute Leibniz Zentrum Moderner Orient) von 2000-2003 unter der Projektleitung von Dr. Brigitte Reinwald & PD Dr. Jan-Georg Deutsch (†) durchgeführt.
'Indian Ocean - Space on the Move' attempts to unravel the complex heterogeneity of the societies on the Indian Ocean rim which have been profoundly affected by the long-term exchange of people, goods, and ideas via the seaways that engendered translocal processes of accommodation and interaction, as well as of conflict and dislocation. Concentrating on the western part of the Greater Indian Ocean, the project focuses on the making (and unmaking) of historical and symbolic spaces and the multiple patterns of social interaction that have evolved in the interstices of land and sea, thus favouring an analytical approach that assumes the existence of historically changing frames of reference. In the case of the Indian Ocean these frames were shaped - inter alia - by shipping routes, 'maritime traffic rhythms', and migration movements within which the coastal towns and villages of the Indian Ocean rim and its islands emerged as nodal points of social, cultural and symbolic contact and communication.
The five researchers working within the wider project examine working patterns and networks of maritime labourers (Ahuja), social biographies (Deutsch), diasporic family histories (Hartwig), perceptions and constructions of ethnic and cultural difference (Bromber), and the processing and representation of intercultural relations in the pictographic media (Reinwald).

Akteure des Wandels. Konflikt und Synthese orientalischer und okzidentaler Kulturen in Lebensläufen und Gruppenbildern
Das Gruppenforschungsprojekt war Teil des Forschungsprogramms „Abgrenzung und Aneignung in der Globalisierung” und wurde am Geisteswissenschaftlichen Zentrum Moderner Orient in Berlin (heute Leibniz Zentrum Moderner Orient) von 1998-2000 unter der Projektleitung von Dr. Heike Liebau und Dr. Katja Füllberg-Stolberg durchgeführt.
Die sieben Teilprojekte befassten sich mit Personen und Gruppen in ausgewählten Regionen Asiens und Afrikas, die im Zeitraum vom 18. bis Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts als "Akteure des Wandels" an den Schnittflächen von Kulturen gewirkt haben. Als Konvertiten und Missionare, bürokratische und politische Eliten, Bauernführer, Kriegsveteranen und islamische Gruppen bewegten sie sich im Spannungsfeld von indigenen Traditionen, westlicher Modernisierung, kapitalistischer Entwicklung und Kolonialherrschaft.
