The core area of Ancient History are the antique civilisations of the Mediterranean region and Central Europe from the emergence of the Greek civil states in the 8th century B.C. until the demise of the Western Roman Empire at around 500 A.D.

A special feature of ancient history studies and research is the thorough interaction with other fundamental sciences. When researching and imparting an era which is usually characterised by a low density of contemporary sources it is crucial to reflect upon all available source material from a joint point of view: literary sources and inscriptions, coins, papyri and archaeological sources.
This variety of methods and multi-perspectivity characteristic of Ancient History is reflected in the research focus of our lecturers.

The Ancient History department of the Leibniz University Hannover cooperates with the August Kestner Museum for many years. This cooperation manifests itself in the joint lecture series “Hanoverian Classical Studies Lectures“ one the one hand and joint seminars and excursions on the other.
